BAUXITE

BAUXITE

Bauxite, rock largely composed of a mixture of hydrous aluminum oxides. Bauxite is the principal ore of aluminum.

All of the bauxite in the Pedernales Region is similar and can be characterized as "Caribbean Bauxite". The Dominican city of Pedernales is the capital of the Pedernales Province, in the Dominican Republic.

Pedernales is located in the southwest of the country, on the border, and has a crossing to the Haitian town of Anse-à-Pitres.  This bauxite is high in iron and low in silica.  The Metallurgical grade bauxite is lower in silica than the Non-Metals grade, which is ideal as a raw material for the manufacture of Portland Cement.
